"It seemed like someone was deciphering something almost every day. "It was just beginning, and you studied it until you got to the point where you simply understood how it worked," Houston recalled. They immersed themselves in the culture and language of Mexican and Central American indigenous people – the descendants of the modern Maya – joining this knowledge with analytical insights and, in many cases, considerable artistic talent. It was left to a half-dozen younger scholars, including Stuart and Houston, to build on these discoveries beginning in the 1980s. Other letters, such as the Spanish "l", and "h" have two syllables, requiring two different symbols. The letter "u" in Spanish is pronounced "ooooh", a sound that Stuart said can be written in Maya "maybe 20 different ways". De Landa had pronounced a letter and the Maya scribes reproduced what they heard. The Maya wrote history.Īnd Soviet linguistics expert Yuri Knorozov discovered that De Landa's alphabet was actually a phonetic syllabary. Harvard's Tatiana Proskouriakoff used this insight to show that Maya inscriptions had dates and images that commemorated particular events and lives. In Mexico, amateur Mayanist Heinrich Berlin identified "emblem glyphs" that were used to symbolise personal and place names. Three crucial insights in the 1950s and 1960s helped erase the myth. They did not believe in Doomsday: 13.0.0.0.0 was just the beginning of another Long Count cycle. They fought wars, conquered territory and treated their enemies badly. They were just as venal and nasty as any other humans. This analysis of the Maya was largely nonsense. It also helped give rise to the misconception that the Maya regarded the Long Count date 13.0.0.0.0 - which correlates to 21 December 2012 – as the end of the world. This early scholarship built the myth of the Maya as a peace-loving people preoccupied with science and ritual. With these tools, scholars figured out the "Long Count" dating system. Colonial-era Spanish Bishop Diego de Landa also provided help for future scholars by getting scribes who were still able to write in the Maya language to transliterate the Spanish alphabet into Maya glyphs. Stuart describes the codices as "handbooks for priests", focusing on astronomical calculations that were quite elaborate and accurate. Three books of bark paper survived the Spanish purge and were rediscovered in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe as the Dresden Codex, the Paris Codex and the Madrid Codex. When the Spaniards arrived in Central America in the 1500s, they did their best to destroy the writings of "heathen" scribes still working in the language of the Maya. Scholars had long thought Yuknoom Yich'aak K'ahk' died in battle, but the new text showed that he had not. In another post, he described how the sign for the phonetic syllable "yo", meaning "his" or "her", might be the word symbol "yop", meaning "leaf", in other texts.Ī third post described a new translation of an inscription from Guatemala, recording the visit of King Yuknoom Yich'aak K'ahk' of Calakmul on 29 January 696, five months after his defeat by armies from the kingdom of Tikal. Last month, for instance, Stuart posted a description of new excavations from Guatemala that suggest the Maya were not necessarily direct descendants of the earlier Olmec culture, as some archaeologists have maintained. You want to lay claim to a new idea and get it noticed by colleagues." "You don't have to wait two years for publication. "The web log gets ideas out quickly, which is very appealing," said Brown University archaeologist Stephen Houston, a longtime Stuart collaborator. The work will take years, but with the help of the internet, the pace is quicker than it has ever been. So five years ago, Stuart started up Maya Decipherment, a blog for scholars and amateurs to post new inscriptions, refine translations and debate the subtleties of Mayan language, all in an effort to fill out the history of the civilisation. But I thought that if I had a blog, I could talk about new things and bring out some old stuff from my dusty files." "I had all these boxes of notes and papers in my office, and I was never going to publish every little observation. Enter University of Texas archaeologist David Stuart, one of the world's leading experts in Maya script.

Male pastors often choose to parade the bodies of women – who make up the majority of congregations – through their sermons. Yet this sermonic moment lacked a challenge to men to consider their mindset while pushing performative modesty onto women in Jesus’s name. It feels like stating the obvious here but if a man doesn’t want to get to know me after seeing the illusion of nudity, the problem is his intention, not my actions. Yet, Todd drops the ball when speaking to women, diminishing our worth to the sum of our body parts. In an attempt at equity, Todd does put the onus on other men in his sermon, asking them to “be a husband that is not trying to impress his college buddies, but be an anchor for your family that may not be as impressive on the ‘gram but you’re impacting the next generation to love and lead their families.” These words see the fullness of men’s humanity and speak to the height of their potential to hold families together and heal generational cycles of brokenness. Todd may be the most recent voice admonishing women to not seek to be impressive with their bodies, but his words echo a generations-long tradition of the church’s repression of women’s bodies and sexuality. Here are some shoppable outfit ideas we love when it comes to semi-formal wedding attire for female guests. If you're looking to shop around and explore, stores like Anthropologie, Reformation, and Nordstrom are going to have excellent semi-formal options. Finally, use accessories to your advantage: matching jewelry can elevate something on the casual side, while block heel sandals (versus rhinestone-covered stilettos) can tone down a fancier ensemble. Dressy jumpsuits, rompers and separates are also appropriate semi-formal wedding attire options. When you're shopping for semi-formal attire for women, you can skip the evening gown and wear a cocktail dress instead. Seemed easiest thing to do since they all own suits already. Our ushers and GM are wearing dark suits, and we will give them a tie to wear. Opt for dress pants or khakis instead, paired with a blazer or suit jacket and tie. I think you should just have them wear their own suit or a button up shirt with slacks, depending on the formality of your wedding. In general, we don't recommend wearing jeans for any type of wedding (even the most casual weddings, unless the couple explicitly allows denim), and especially not for a semi-formal dress code. Can you wear jeans to a semi-formal wedding?Įven though semi-formal is interchangeable with "dressy casual," you shouldn't take the phrase too literally. Avoid sneakers (even if they're brand new), flip flops or casual boots. Leather brogues, oxfords, loafers and dress shoes are all good footwear choices for men attending a semi-formal wedding. If you're not a heels person, a nice pair of embellished sandals or classic flats are appropriate. Women should wear high heels or pumps-dressy wedges and heeled booties also work. What shoes do you wear with semi-formal wedding attire? From a standard deck of 52 cards, the 8s, 9s, and 10s are not used. L'Hombre is played with a deck of 40 cards in the four standard suits. In this presentation, equivalent English terms have been substituted for Danish terms, but French and Spanish terms have been left as used in Denmark. When played in Denmark, a mixture of Danish, French, and Spanish terms are used. Like many card games, L'Hombre has a particular terminology. The Danish L'Hombre literature also describes Pot L'Hombre, in which most of the payments are made to and from a pot, rather than between the players, but few if any people now play this way. Strictly, the version described here is called "Rasle L'Hombre". By comparison with other players' rules, it seems reasonable to describe this version of the game as "pure" or "minimal". The following detailed description of the game is based on the rules as played in the author's family. The general direction of rotation in the game is counter-clockwise. When declarer makes his contract, the defenders each pay declarer when the contract fails, declarer pays each defender. In general, the amount of payment increases with the rank of the contract. However, as soon as the outcome of the contract is clear, declarer will face his hand and make a statement to that effect.Īfter the play, immediate payment is made in the form of tokens. When the contract is known, the players take turns exchanging cards with the talon, subject to restrictions particular to each contract.Īfterwards, nine tricks are played. Declarer plays either a game contract, where his objective is to take more tricks than either defender, or a nolo contract, where his objective is not to take any tricks at all. The final bid by declarer determines the contract. The winner of the bidding becomes the declarer, and plays alone against the other two players (defenders) in partnership. Each active player is dealt 9 cards and the remaining 13 form the talon. It is also quite often played by four people, but there are still only 3 active players in each hand the player opposite the dealer sits out. L'Hombre is a three-handed trick taking game. Un Peu de Lumière sur L'Hombre" and appeared in Vol XV, No 4, pp 101-110, Vol XVI, No 1, pp 10-18, and Vol XVI, No 2, pp 44-53. It was from L'Hombre that the idea of bidding was adopted into other card games such as Tarot, Skat and Boston.Īn excellent account of the early history of L'Hombre (from which some of the above information is taken) can be found in a series of three articles by Thierry Depaulis in The Playing-Card (Journal of the International Playing-Card Society). The declarer was originally called Hombre (i.e. L'Hombre was one of the first games to introduce bidding, through which one player becomes the declarer, trying to make a contract, with the other players cooperating to prevent him. Versions of the game have also survived in Spain itself, where it is known as El Tresillo, in the Faroes and in Iceland, and in Peru and Bolivia, where it is known as Rocambor. It is played mostly in Jutland and on the island of Funen, and is organised by the L'Hombre union. Its popularity was eclipsed in the late 18th century by a new four player variant Quadrille, which was in turn displaced by Whist, Boston and eventually Bridge.Īlthough L'Hombre died out in other parts of Europe, it remained popular in Denmark right up to the 21st century. It was variously known as Hombre, Ombre or L'Hombre, and over the years it acquired many variations, of increasing complexity. The three player version, which in Spain was originally called Hombre Renegado spread rapidly across Europe and during the 17th and 18th centuries became the premier card game, occupying a position of prestige similar to Bridge today. L'Hombre was developed in Spain in the early 17th century, as a variation of an earlier four player game, also called Hombre. This page describes the version of the game currently played in Denmark. It has an illustrious history, going back to the beginning of the 17th century, or earlier. L'Hombre (pronounced "lomber") is a fast-moving trick-taking game, played by 3 (or 4) players. Tracy Sampson alleges that he had sex with her when she was 17 and claims that Kelly “often tried to control every aspect of my life.” Patrice Jones claims Kelly coerced her into having an abortion, while Montina Woods claims Kelly taped her during sex without her consent. With Kelly established as a global superstar and the self-proclaimed “King of R&B,” a series of women sue Kelly for sexual misconduct. Kelly countersues and later settles the initial lawsuit. Hawkins alleges that Kelly “engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct” with her in 1991, when she was 15 and he was 24. Jim DeRogatis, a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times, publishes an article that reveals that Kelly was sued in 1996 by Tiffany Hawkins, an aspiring singer. When Kelly asked about the marriage reports in 2016, he said: “Out of respect for her mother who’s sick and her father who’s passed, I will never have that conversation with anyone.” December 2000: The investigation begins She says she had cut off all contact with Kelly. The marriage is reportedly annulled months later, and in May 1997, Aliyah files suit in Cook County seeking to have all records of the marriage expunged. But while the marriage certificate falsely lists her age as 18, she is actually 15. Kelly marries AliyahĪs Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number climbs into the top ten on the R&B/Hip-Hop Album charts, Kelly secretly marries Aliyah in Chicago. A month later, his protégé Aliyah releases her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number, which was almost entirely written and produced by him. Kelly, 27, achieves mainstream success when his single “Bump n’ Grind” hits number one on the Billboard 100. If you're curious, the lyrics can be found on Genius, and you can listen to it on SoundCloud, though I don't suggest doing that.R. It's an absolutely baffling attempt from a man who has lost everything-his reputation, his career, his money. "And if you really, really wanna know/ Her father dropped her off at my show/ And told this boy to put her on stage/ I admit that she was over age/ I admit that I was feelin’ her and I admit that she was feelin’ me/ I admit that that’s the sh– that comes with/ being a celebrity/ I ain’t chasing these ladies/ These ladies are chasing me, yeah," he raps.Īnd later: "To Jim DeRogatis, whatever your name is (whatever your name is)/ You been tryna destroy me for 25 whole years/ Writin’ the same stories over and over against/ Off my name, you done went and made yourself a career/ But guess what? I pray for you and family, and all my other enemies/ I’m not gonna let y’all steal my joy, I’m just gonna keep on doing me." Though the title posits an admission of guilt, Kelly instead uses this track to paint himself as the victim, placing the blame on the parents of Jocelyn Savage (who accused the singer of kidnapping their daughter), and on Chicago journalist Jim DeRogatis, who first reported on the sex tape. "Now, I admit a family member touched me / From a child to the age 14 / While I laid asleep, took my virginity." "Said I’m abusing these women, what the fuck that’s some absurd shit / They’re brainwashed, really? / Kidnapped, really? / Can’t eat, really? / Real talk, that shit sound silly," he raps. In a new, 19-minute song "I Admit," Kelly once again attempts to defend his lifetime of scandal, addressing the sex cult allegations, while claiming that one of his own family members abused him at a young age. Kelly's famous 2008 trial for child-pornography charges-involving a video which allegedly showed him having sex with a 14-year-old girl-was eventually dismissed, although numerous other allegations have followed him throughout the decade. These allegations range from pedophilia to running an alleged sex cult. Kelly spent his career avoiding multiple chilling allegations of sexual abuse that date back to the mid-'90s.
